Trafalgar expects some garden duty

THE success story of Yorkshire's own Trafalgar Square has come full circle with the news the regenerated area is to feature in Yorkshire in Bloom.

In 2005, the square made national headlines after the Yorkshire Post revealed residents were unable to hold a street party to mark Trafalgar Day because of troublemakers.

Residents decided to take a stand and a group called Residents and Friends of Trafalgar Square (RAFTS) turned the tide on drug dealing, alcohol abuse and anti-social behaviour .

Now RAFTS is having a clean-up on Thursday to prepare for the Yorkshire in Bloom Neighbourhood Award judging on July 14.

Volunteers will be weeding footpaths, litter-picking and sprucing up the area and would welcome any others to help tidy up the square.

The Yorkshire in Bloom Neighbourhood Awards try to instill pride in local areas by recognising the efforts made by communities to improve their area.

The clean-up morning will be held from 10am until noon.
