Town’s 200-year-old ‘jewel’ set for £16m development

PLANS have been submitted to redevelop the Grade I listed Piece Hall at Halifax, one of Yorkshire’s most important buildings.

Calderdale Council is working up a multi-million pound project to pull in more visitors and create a “world class destination”.

The plans, to be discussed by councillors on Tuesday December 4, include details of repairs and refurbishment as well as four new lifts, two water features in the courtyard and new openings in external walls.

A four-storey extension next to the Piece Hall will include space for two restaurants, a conference suite and a lift.

The Piece Hall itself would be able to accommodate a range of commercial, creative and cultural uses. The courtyard would continue to be used as a public space for markets and informal recreation.

The council wants to the courtyard to be transformed into a “thriving town square” surrounded by quality attractions to draw visitors from outside Halifax.

Two objectors have complained about the proposed ‘holes’ in the Piece Hall walls and raised concerns about the water features. Planning chiefs say the plans are acceptable in principle.

News of the application follows the appointment of Barry Reynolds as project director.

His role includes leading the construction phase; developing the business plan; fund raising with the Piece Hall Trust; developing events, communication and marketing strategies; and helping to create learning opportunities and a visitor and heritage centre.

Mr Reynolds, who formerly worked in project management at Kirklees Council, said: “I’m delighted to be working to redevelop this fantastic building. I have lived in Halifax for 10 years, so as a resident I want it to be a place where my family and friends want to spend their time.

“I’m excited about the challenges ahead. The Piece Hall Transformation Project is part of a wider series of initiatives around the Piece Hall, which are independent of each other but where future cross-benefits are clear. The Piece Hall and its ‘offer’ to visitors and occupiers should complement these other projects.”

Construction is expected to start at the end of next year and will be completed in 2015. It will then transfer to an independent Piece Hall Trust.
