Thousands drawn to mystery happening in Yorkshire park

The promise of an eerie encounter, and the rebirth of a potent Hull legend, has been attracting thousands of people to East Park.A crowd of curious onlookers waits expectantly near the main gates as night falls. A horse-drawn carriage clatters to halt before leading the procession - everyone soon falls into line - down an eerily-lit avenue of trees to the sound of a tolling bell. People fall silent as they take in a foreboding scene: in the distance dark figures are picking their way with lanterns through heavy palls of smoke. When the crowd arrives in an open space they hear about the legends of the "7 Alleys", with spooky voice-overs, intermingling with flames, explosions and acrobatics. They are the stories children grew up listening to in east Hull: there's the tale of the Bubblegum Boy - who supposedly choked to death swallowing bubblegum - and the White Lady of Sutton, who is said to have thrown herself off a railway bridge to her death. There may be no truth in the folklore, but 7 Alleys is rooted in reality, a now lost alley which ran behind Hull Prison and Hedon Road Cemetery. You can still see the steps leading down to the start of the alleyway as you cross the bridge near the jail.No one had the slightest idea of what to expect before venturing out - it was a true tale of the unexpected.
