Thieves make off with HGV from car park

Police are urging lorry and van drivers to be on their guard after a £150,000 heavy goods vehicle was stolen and abandoned in the Doncaster area.

In the latest of a spate of incidents, the HGV, which was carrying a crane, was stolen from a town centre hotel car park on Tuesday. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Stockbridge Lane, Bentley, with its load intact.

Chief Inspector Gwyn Thomas of South Yorkshire Police said: “We are seeing an increase in the number of tools and plant equipment being stolen from across the area.

“We’d urge drivers of commercial vehicles to keep belongings safe and secure, remove tools from vans overnight and at weekends and ensure plant equipment is in a safe location.”

South Yorkshire Police launched Operation Lockdown in October to target house burglary and vehicle crime. So far, over 700 suspects have been arrested.
