Thieves blasted for stealing road signs

North Yorkshire Police have been alerted after 20 signs, which cost about £1,000, were stolen during Wednesday night on the A1079 Hull Road in York.

The signs were put in place to warn the public of re-surfacing works, which began yesterday and are being carried out during this evening and in the day on Monday.

York Council’s cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, Coun Dafydd Williams, said last night: “It astounds me why people would jeopardise the safety of others and steal signs which are clearly there to warn members of the public of roadworks on one of the busiest roads in York.”

A council spokeswoman stressed the re-surfacing works between York Road and Common Lane are still taking place.

But the authority has been forced to draft in a traffic management contractor at an additional cost to provide new traffic signs.
