Teachers in strike threat over college cuts

TEACHERS at a sixth form college yesterday threatened to take strike action next week over £1m in cuts which they said would have a “dramatic” impact on the future of deprived teenagers.

The National Union of Teachers said 95 per cent of its members at Longley Park sixth form college had voted in favour of a walk-out after being told one fifth of the staff faced redundancy.

The college was set up in 2004 to provide post-16 education for young people in deprived wards in the north of Sheffield.

A spokesman said: “These cuts are partly due to Government cuts and as such we also ask our political representatives to do all they can to fight them.

“If no progress is made in talks with management action will commence with a one-day strike on Thursday, March 14.”
