Taxi drivers get trained in the past

TAXI and bus drivers in one of Yorkshire's prime tourism destinations are being trained today to help to ensure they give a warm welcome to visitors.

A tourism training day aimed at the taxi and bus drivers in York is being staged to sharpen their knowledge of the city.

The drivers will be able to learn more facts about the city’s history, its wealth of attractions and information on new exhibitions which they will be able to pass on to passengers who are visiting York.

Once they have completed a short test, drivers will get an accredited sign to put in the window of their vehicle which shows they are able to talk knowledgeably on what the city has to offer.

The event has been organised by the city’s tourism partnership, Visit York, along with the York Taxi Association and York Council.

Visit York’s business development manager, Sue Frumin, said: “Taxi and bus drivers are often the first port of call for visitors when they arrive in the city, so getting first hand tips on how to get around and what to see gets their stay off to a great start.”

The training, from 9am to 11am at The Monkbar Hotel in St Maurice’s Road, will be presented by Chris Morton of York Visitor Information Centre and city tour guide Keith Mulhearn.
