Tank given a lift on renovation journey

A rusting tank that took part in decisive battles in the liberation of Europe arrives at Wakefield firm TEi Ltd where it will be restored by apprentice engineers.

The 20-tonne Sherman tank was involved in fighting with the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry whose men suffered heavy casualties. It has taken pride of place outside the National Liberation Museum in Grosebeek, Holland, but in recent years has started to look its age.

The Sherman is now being refurbished by welders and other engineers at TEi, based on Calder Vale Road.

Everyone involved in the revamp – from the ferry firm to the crane company needed to lift it on to a low-loader – has given their time for free, including TEi.

The Wakefield firm became involved after the Dutch museum asked for help with restoration from the modern-day Rangers, now a Territorial Army unit whose members include TEi engineer Bob Gregory.
