Surf’s up for future bay watchers

YOUNG lifesavers of the future were put through their paces on the Scarborough sands yesterday by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The youngsters from East Whitby Community Primary School were taught first-aid skills and safety tips by lifeguards from the RNLI under a new scheme run by the charity aimed at children aged between eight and 12 across North Yorkshire and the East Riding.

The RNLI lifeguards, who resume their daily patrols on the town’s beach from this Saturday, gave valuable tips on key hazards, safety flags and dealing with trouble in the water.

Headteacher, Tony Mok, said: “We are delighted to be part of this very important initiative.

“Any chance to give our pupils experiences that will keep them safe and enable them to make potentially life-saving decisions can only be welcomed.”

The scheme, called Hit the Surf, is being delivered to more than 5,500 pupils at 177 primary schools.
