Suicide theory as soldier dies at Army barracks

The death of a soldier at an Army barracks has prompted a police investigation, although officers said there are no suspicious circumstances.

It is understood that the death of the 28-year-old bombardier at Baker Barracks, Thorney Island, near Emsworth, West Sussex, on Wednesday is being treated as suicide.

An Army spokesman said: “It is with great sadness we can confirm that a member of 12 Regiment Royal Artillery has been found dead on Thorney Island.

“Next of kin have been informed and while the death is not believed to be suspicious the matter is in the hands of Sussex Police.

“As such we are unable to comment further at this stage.”

A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to the scene at 8pm on Wednesday.

“The matter has been passed to the coroner’s officer and the inquest is yet to be opened.”
