Students to get taste of Hollywood work

A BIT of Hollywood is coming to Huddersfield and Dewsbury as Kirklees College hosts a new movie to be shot by the Co-operative British Youth Film Academy (BYFA).

One of the BYFA’s founding members, Kirklees College will bring the magic of the movies to town by hosting a full-length feature film and involving up to 150 students in all aspects of production.

BYFA offers young people a chance to experience the challenges of feature-film production. Mentored by professionals, students can get involved in everything from acting to make-up, wardrobe to camera and post-production through to the red carpet experience.

It is backed by the Co-operative’s £1.2m partnership with BYFA.

The new film, Dr Faustus, is to be directed by Robin Heap, a filmmaker who has worked on previous BYFA films including Julius Caesar and The Rochdale Pioneers.

Kirklees College’s head of creative industries, Karen Matula, said: “We’re really pleased to be hosting the making of BYFA’s latest film this summer.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for our students and a great way of using our cherished Batley School of Art building in Dewsbury.

“BYFA gives students every opportunity to get real work experience in the film industry and it’s not just about the acting and the film production work, media, hair, beauty, fashion, design and catering, students all have an opportunity to be involved in the creation of a film everyone can be proud of – the experience is priceless.”

Kevin Atkinson, of the Co-operative British Youth Film Academy, said: “The film industry is notoriously hard to break in to and it is our aim to break down those barriers, making this opportunity accessible to all.”
