Students set out to help each other

Students from a Yorkshire college are to hold a fundraiser to help their peers in financial hardship.

Staff and students from Craven College will host their inaugural grand summer fair on Saturday May 14 to raise money for students who will suffer from the loss of the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) next year.

EMA is a weekly payment that supports students in funding their studies.

Since the Student Representative Body voiced concerns over the loss of EMA with college governors, student governor Ruth Anderson and council shadow president Robert Laughlin have worked with the college fundraising committee to plan the event.

Acting principal Wes Johnson said: “We hope that the local community comes out and supports the summer fair. The money that we raise will go directly to students to help more young people to fund their travel to and from Skipton, books and equipment.

“It will be a fun day and it is good to see our students supporting each other in this way.”

The fair will be open from 11am to 3pm at the Aireville site.

All areas of the college will be involved.
