Students’ new designs on gallery

DESIGNS for a new life for a derelict 18th century watermill are set to go on display at The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield.

Students from Leeds Metropolitan University have explored
potential future uses for the historic Upper Mills, which stands just metres away from the art gallery on the banks of the River Calder.

The historical significance of
the former 18th century
watermill has protected it from demolition, but without
funding and a sustainable new purpose its future remains uncertain.

The exhibition entitled Upper Mills: Re-imagined is sponsored by the Leeds Sustainability Institute.

It will launch at an invite-only event next Tuesday night and remain open to the public until Saturday, October 12.

Curated by final year Leeds Met BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design students, Amy Ackerley, Rebecca Allsop and Marija Laurinaityte, the collection presents a range of their own
and fellow undergraduates’ ideas for sustainable conservation, restoration, adaptation and remodelling of the Grade II listed Upper Mills.
