Street’s ahead as builders move in

Work has started on a £6.5m youth and community complex in Scarborough which could eventually see more than 100 new jobs created.

The Street will boast a sprung-floor dance studio, a sports hall, a climbing wall and a café – with work set to be completed by October.

The state-of-the-art four-storey building, on the William Street car park, will also feature a recording studio, an art studio, shops, a garden and roof terrace.

The facility will serve more than 6,500 youngsters and will house at least 20 voluntary and community groups. It will also offer opportunities for education and training, exercise, advice and support and a safe location to meet and socialise. It is hoped that after three years it will have created jobs for up to 130 people.

The Street will be developed and owned by Scarborough-based enterprise charity Seachange, working in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council.

Seachange enterprise manager Sarah Fenwick said: “It is a tremendous milestone for The Street and the first tangible sign of the centre coming to fruition after many years of planning. We have been looking to get a youth centre for Scarborough for more than a decade and now we can see all those hopes start to become a reality.”

Youngsters who have spent a number of years pushing for a new youth complex in the town, including the Street Youth Group, have been celebrating the milestone.

Devon Page, 17, apprentice project worker at The Street, has been involved in the scheme for more than five years.

He said: “From the moment I heard about the project I was completely committed to seeing it become a reality. Now all the hard work is finally paying off. After visiting the site, it finally began to sink in that after all the hurdles we have faced The Street will become a reality and change the face of Scarborough.”
