Stalwart at leading museum praised

Joyce Williams, has been presented with an MBE in recognition for the vital work that she has carried out on behalf of the Friends of Clifton Park Museum.

And a special event was held at the twice nominated Museum of the Year to celebrate the honour and mark Mrs Williams’ contribution to ensuring it remains popular in the future.

Mrs Williams started the Friends of Clifton Park Museum in 1998 alongside Alison Duce, Leo Leader, Heather Lilleker, Keith Moore and Kate Saunders.

Soon after, roughly 40 members being signed up with Joyce acting as chairwoman of the group. She was on the committee until the summer of 2007.

During her time in charge the museum secured £87,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and was nominated for the national Gulbenkian Arts Prize, eventually finishing as runner up.

Speaking at the event, Rotherham Council’s cabinet member for Lifelong Learning and Culture, Coun Amy Rushforth, said: “I would like to thank Joyce and congratulate her on her MBE, it is richly deserved and is a fine reward for her many years of service to our beloved museum.

“Clifton Park Museum just wouldn’t be the same place without Joyce and all the wonderful things she has done for the place.

“She has brought joy and life to one of Rotherham’s most loved attractions and will be forever synonymous with the museum.

“Without Joyce, we would not have been able to achieve as much as we have, or make Clifton Park Museum the success it has been. The projects, scheme, events and grant funding she has been part of have enhanced the museum immeasurably.

“It is a joy to still see Joyce active in the museum and may it continue for many years more.”
