Sport centre boosts disabled facilities

FACILITIES for disabled people have been improved at Sheffield’s Concord Sports Centre, with the addition of three new sensory rooms with a variety of lights, smells and sounds.

In the rooms, at the centre in Shiregreen, people can learn different colours and sounds, relax and stimulate their senses through features such as bubble tubes, water beds and bean bags that play music.

Coun Alan Law, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, said: “I became familiar with multi-sensory rooms only a year ago and they are tremendous because they are useful for all groups of people.

“It is brilliant what Sheffield International Venues is doing with the room and Concord itself.

People in this area deserve these excellent facilities.”

Richard Apps, general manager at Concord Sports Centre, which is run by Sheffield International Venues, added: “I started looking into multi-sensory rooms in 2002, but it was only last year that I was able to progress it further.

“I am thrilled we are now able to offer this service to the public.

“It creates different experiences for different people and builds the bigger picture for people with disabilities.”
