Special invitation as castle celebrates St George's Day

CHILDREN will be able to train as squires or see a battle between St George and the dragon at a medieval-themed event at Bolsover Castle this weekend.

English Heritage is running the events on Saturday and Sunday to mark St George's Day, and is also offering free entry to the castle for those named either George or Georgina.

Andrea Hill, English Heritage visitor operations manager, said: "The St George's Day celebrations at Bolsover Castle have become so popular that this year we have extended it to a two-day event.

"Any Georges or Georginas who come to Bolsover Castle to help us celebrate St George's Day will be admitted free of charge. They just need to bring proof of identity."

Visitors to the castle, near Chesterfield, this weekend will be able to explore a knights' medieval encampment where they can meet the knights and see demonstrations of 14th century cookery and make-up.

Children, meanwhile, can take part in a hobby horse joust and also get involved in a re-enactment of the legendary battle between England's patron saint, St George, and the dragon.

Each day will conclude with a display of knights battling each other on foot, in a medieval tournament.
