Scores of people were watching the skydive involving a display team at a charity music festival in the town when the incident happened on Sunday evening.

Ryan Brown, 31, from Goole, who was one of a group of five jumpers from Skydive GB taking part in the fundraising event at Bridlington Sports and Community Club, was airlifted to Scarborough in an RAF helicopter.

Det Sgt Steve Shanks said the experienced parachutist death appeared to be a "tragic accident."

Police have footage taken both from the ground and from his co-jumpers, who had cameras attached to their helmets. Det Sgt Shanks said: "It is clear he landed heavily. His gear has been retained and will be examined but there's no suggestion that there was any fault with his equipment."

The British Parachuting Association has opened an investigation into the man's death and representatives are due to visit the scene of the accident this week. Skydive GB declined to comment.

Anyone who attended the event is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222.

The accident comes just months after the deaths of two experienced skydivers who were killed during a display.

Brian Laithwaite, 65, from Wigan, and Emma Bramley, 31, from Nottingham were part of a six-strong group at Langar Airfield in Nottinghamshire on June 4 when Ms Bramley's parachute became tangled up with Mr Laithwaite's body, causing them to plummet to the ground.
