Road race organisers aiming for record 10,000 runners

RUNNERS inspired by this year’s London Marathon can now sign up to the Great Yorkshire Run, set to take place in Sheffield in October.

The fourth annual road race will follow a 10k route from Arundel Gate in the city centre to Hillsborough football ground and back on Sunday, October 9

Emmerdale actress Nicola Wheeler, who officially launched the event, said: “I do a lot of running for Leukaemia and Lymphona Research, taking part in the Great Yorkshire Run every year since it began, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to the day.”

Entry levels have increased each year since the run was launched in 2007 and, this year, organisers hope the race will break the 10,000 mark for the first time.

Former Olympic middle-distance runner John Mayock, from Barnsley, is the main organiser of the event. He said: “The race really boasts a great day to be had by people of all ages, whether that be in the 10k, junior fun runs, or for those coming to hear the music in Bands on the Run. Race day is just over five months away, but with the launch a little earlier this year it gives people the perfect amount of time to train enough.”

Entry for the Great Yorkshire Run costs £25.
