Road race leaders decide to back hospital cancer charity

ORGANISERS of the Great Yorkshire Run, a 10k road race which takes place in Sheffield in October, have chosen Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity as the local cause to benefit from this year’s race.

Since the event began in 2007 more than 24,000 people have taken part in the race, which follows a route from Arundel Gate in Sheffield city centre to Hillsborough and back.

Former Olympic middle distance runner and event organiser John Mayock said: “Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity was an obvious choice to support as a local organisation for the run.

“It does tremendous work for people across the South Yorkshire region and surrounding areas.

“It is staggering to think that one in three people are affected by cancer at some point during their lives, so anything we can do to support and raise awareness about the charity is crucial.

“Entries are coming in thick and fast, but there’s still time to sign up for the main race and junior runs.

“The event offers the chance to raise as much money as possible for charity, whilst taking part in one of the biggest races in the region.”

This year’s race will be held on Sunday, October 9 and more than 3,000 people have already signed up.

Entry costs £25 for adults, while youngsters can sign up to the Bupa Junior and Mini Great Yorkshire Run for just £9.
