Resort traders unite against council move

SCARBOROUGH traders have lodged a formal objection to the council’s plans to relocate from its crumbling town hall to a new headquarters.

Scarborough Borough Council is considering relocating from the grade II listed building on St Nicholas Street, which it has occupied for more than a century, to the former Scarborough Building Society headquarters at Prospect House. The proposals are due to go before its cabinet next month.

But the Scarborough and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce has now announced its opposition to the plans, saying moving up to 340 workers to an out of town location would “suck the life out of the town centre”.

Chairman Chris Golder said: “Scarborough needs to maintain a busy, vibrant town centre for the benefit of both our local population and our visitors.”
