Residents flock to join town's loyalty card scheme for shops

HUNDREDS of shoppers have signed up to a new loyalty card scheme in Rotherham which aims to encourage people to shop in the town centre.

At an event held earlier this week, more than 400 people visited a Shop Local stall to sign up for the newly launched loyalty card, which entitles holders to discounts from more than 60 town centre businesses.

Rotherham Council's Cabinet member for economic development, planning and transportation, Gerald Smith, said: "It's great to see the scheme working so well.

"The response from the public in its first three days of running has encouraged yet more town centre businesses to sign up to take part and offer their discounts.

"I encourage every business to take part in this and every shopper to register for their card as this is a win-win situation for the town centre and its shoppers."

The Shop Local stall, which is manned by staff from the council's business and retail investment team, will be running again as part of the street market on Tuesday, July 13.

Those who missed out on signing up for the scheme this week will be able to register for their card and receive a goodie bag.

A council spokesman said: "Since the launch, over 200 people in just two days have signed up on line by visiting www.rotherhamtowncentre.co.uk to receive their Shop Local loyalty card.

"People will also have the chance to register at participating stores, which are showing the Shop Local sticker in their windows, or through the visitor centre and library."

Clothes shops, restaurants and hairdressers are among the enterprises to sign up to the scheme.
