Residents attack flats project on waterfront overlooking marina

A PUBLIC seating area with benches and trees overlooking Hull Marina could be buried under concrete as a result of plans for a new flats block, rising up to 10 storeys high.

Residents, many of them elderly, living in Henry Vernone Court opposite are up in arms, saying views will be completely obstructed and they will be plunged into darkness.

They also say the new building would be completely out of scale with the surrounding area, including the historic Minerva pub.

The L-shaped building, housing 62 flats with restaurants, cafes and bars downstairs, will take up open space in Minerva Terrace which features an ancient cannon as well as the "blenny" feature on the famous Hull Fish Trail, as well as the residents' car park round the corner in Wellington Street.

In Minerva Terrace the building would be six storeys high, rising to 10 storeys towards the Wellington Street bridge.

Protester Kenneth Jeffries said the building would be "overbearing" and "out of place" "in an area which should be preserved not only for this generation, but for generations to come".

But developers Ispace said the plans would, if approved, kickstart "much needed quality regeneration".
