Rescuers launch funding drive

AN EAST Coast lifeboat station has unveiled a series of summer fundraising events to help keep the service in operation.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue is one of almost 70 independent life-saving organisations around the coast of the UK that depend entirely on raising their own funds.

Unveiling their latest events, the organisers thanked their supporters and appealed for new volunteers to help boost the service’s coffers.

Fundraising co-ordinator Rick Sumner said: “Running costs for Hornsea Rescue are over £30,000 a year; that’s £2,500 a month or over £600 a week, which is a lot of money to find.

“That funds fuel, equipment, training, running the boathouse and all other ongoing costs.

“We would like to thank anyone and everyone who has helped in any way with raising funds or donating, and hope people will continue to support us by coming along to some of the events for this summer.

“We are always keen to hear from people who can raise funds for us, or who would like to help out by joining our fundraising team,” he said.

A car boot sale is held every Sunday next to the boathouse in Burton Road.

The group is also hoping to recruit people to work at its seafront kiosk, near the marine hotel, which is open every Sunday to sell souvenirs.

Tickets have now gone on sale for two main fundraising events this summer.

A dinner-dance will be held at the Millhouse Restaurant in Skidby on Friday June 3. Tickets cost £27.50 and include a three-course meal and entertainment.
