Refinery workers walk out for second day

Around 450 contractors have downed tools for a second day over safety concerns at a Texan owned oil refinery on the Humber.

It followed an incident last week where two men were taken to hospital after a gas leak. One of them is still in hospital, according to GMB organiser Shaune Clarkson, who said the incident was “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” Mr Clarkson said he’d advised the men to return to work, but the men were adamant that they wanted a senior representative from Phillips 66 to address them directly, as was agreed last Friday.

He said: “There’s been a number of incidents and a build up of safety concerns.”

The refinery processes a quarter of a million barrels of crude oil a day.

Phillips 66 said safety was their number one priority and they would continue talking to contractor management to resolve the matter.
