Rare stage role for Godber and wife

AWARD-WINNING Yorkshire playwright John Godber is taking on a new stage role - alongside his wife.

Godber, creative director at Theatre Royal Wakefield, is taking on the rare role in Shafted! his new play which traces what happens to a couple in the thirty years following the Miner’s Strike.

It is the first time Godber and wife Jane Thornton have appeared on stage together since a sell-out production of April in Paris at Hull Truck Theatre in 2010.

The production, which premieres in Wakefield in April, will also play at East Riding Theatre, Beverley and The Lamproom Theatre Barnsley.

It is Godber’s 68th production, which include Bouncers and Teechers. He said: “I am excited about the prospect of working on this new play which spans thirty years.”
