MORE than one in four motorists pulled over in spot checks in Beverley was either breaking the law or had a fault with their vehicle.

Officers from Humberside Police, East Riding Council and HM Revenue and Customs stopped about 80 drivers in Norwood to assess their driving and inspect their vehicles.

One vehicle was not insured, one did not have a valid MoT, one was taken off the road for safety reasons, three had illegally tinted windows and eight had defects.

A total of 22 drivers were not wearing seat belts, four were found using mobile phones while driving, and one driver was summonsed for a bald tyre.

Further investigations are being made by the trading standards officers on five potentially illegal traders, and the council will also investigate an illegal waste carrier.

Coun Matthew Grove, portfolio holder for highways and emergency planning at the council, said: “Reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads is a very high priority for this council.

“Uninsured drivers put the lives and wellbeing of others at risk every time they get behind the wheel.

“By working together with other agencies and holding events like this we can help protect the responsible and careful drivers of the East Riding from those with no licence or insurance, in vehicles which are not road-worthy, who are driving illegally and without regard for any other road user.”

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services, added: “It makes perfect sense that a unified approach to this kind of work is used to tackle a wide range of motoring offences from highway safety to environmental concerns.

“I’m pleased that the day was a success.”
