Public given first glimpse of £20m housing development

ARTISTS’ impressions have been revealed to show what a £20m development of apartments and student flats in Sheffield city centre will look like.

The scheme, split over two sites on either side of Sidney Street, will involve the demolition of derelict industrial buildings and the former Niche nightclub, which was closed after numerous run-ins with the authorities.

Site A, the northernmost site, will include a six-storey block of 23 student flats, a five-storey block of 21 private apartments and 21 town houses.

There will also be a ground floor unit to be used as either a cafe or an office, and a central courtyard.

On Site B, flats for 52 students will be built on the Niche site and 42 private apartments will be built on the former Speedwell Works. Albert Works will be converted to create offices, a micro-brewery, a riverside walk and a glasshouse.

Peter Cartwright, director of developer Cartwright Pickard Architects, said: “The mix of accommodation is quite diverse and should appeal to both students and residents who want a great experience when living in Sheffield.”

Dale Fixter, director of Elmsdale Estates, said: “We have had a vision for this derelict area for many years.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to provide a first-class scheme in a prime position.”
