Pub staff to get help weeding out under-age drinkers

PUBLICANS and bar staff are to be given specialist training on how to deal with under-age drinking and violent customers in a bid to reduce alcohol-related problems in South Yorkshire.

The new training course, which will be run by Doncaster Council, aims to give pub and club workers from across the county the skills to spot illegal drinking and help them with ways to defuse potentially dangerous situations.

South Yorkshire Police has also endorsed the Essentials of Responsible Alcohol Retailing course, with senior officers suggesting that retailers from across South Yorkshire caught breaking licensing laws on their premises should be sent to Doncaster to take the course.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: “Anyone who works in the drinks industry can attend the training and it is hoped it will be seen as a useful tool for new starters in pubs and clubs, as well as a good refresher course for staff members who have worked in the trade for a bit longer.

“If a venue fails an underage drinking test then they will have to pay a fine or pay to attend the training course.

“The training has close links to Doncaster’s Best Bar None scheme, which was set up to make sure visitors have a safe and enjoyable night out in the town.”

Coun Cynthia Ransome, Doncaster Council’s licensing spokesman said the council was keen to improve the image of the town centre, which is a hotspot nights out for young people.

She added: “I’m pleased to see that bar staff and pub traders are being given the opportunity to learn new skills, rather than simply getting hit with an instant fine.

“I hope that under-age drinkers will take note and see this as another reason to stay out of Doncaster’s pubs and clubs.”

Chief Inspector Ian Bint added: “South Yorkshire Police fully support this and I’m always happy to see new measures aimed at tackling under-age drinking and improving the skills of retailers.”
