£2bn road plans put on show at city’s mall

A ROADSHOW will be held at Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre on Thursday, August 30, to give people in the Carbook area more information about the coming roadworks under the Streets Ahead scheme.

Streets Ahead is Sheffield Council’s 25-year highways project, being carried out by contractor Amey, that will revamp every street across the city at a cost of £2bn.

At the roadshow, to be held at The Source from 5pm to 8pm, people will be given further details of the forthcoming roadworks and will also have the chance to put their questions to representatives from both Amey and Sheffield Council.

Graeme Symonds, network director for Amey, said: “Carbrook will be a challenging area for us but we’re committed to carrying out these works in the most effective and efficient way possible, trying not to interfere with day-to-day business activity as much as we can.

“Although these improvement works are essential and inevitably mean a level of disruption for all commuters, businesses and residents in the Carbrook area, the last thing we want to do is jeopardise people’s livelihoods.

“So we’re keen to hear from businesses about how we can accommodate their needs.

“We will be keeping businesses informed of when we’ll be in the area through letter drops, road signage.

“We hope that the long-term benefits will outweigh any short-term inconvenience.”

It is anticipated that it will take between 15 to 20 weeks to carry out all the works across the whole of the Carbrook area.

Works will start in October when Amey will begin upgrading the area’s street lighting with what it refers to as “new LED energy-efficient technology.”

They will then replace gullies and carry out “major drainage improvements”, as well as resurfacing footpaths and then resurfacing any roads that need it.
