Praise for designers of new city apartments

TWO new buildings in Leeds’ Granary Wharf canalside development have been shortlisted for an award for their design.

Candle House and Waterman’s Place, both residential developments, have been nominated in the ‘new buildings’ category of the Leeds Architecture Awards.

Architects, developers and regeneration specialists will gather at Leeds Town Hall on Thursday evening to celebrate the best designs and hear the winners.

In the “conserved buildings” category, the shortlist includes the City Varieties Music Hall, St Chad’s Church at Headingley and Left Bank, Hyde Park, a former church which has been converted into a centre for various community events.

In the “altered buildings” category, St George’s Crypt, a homeless charity, will go head-to-head with three other developments including Greenhouse at Hunslet.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds Council executive member for development and economy said: “It’s wonderful to see the contrast of developments at the Leeds Architecture Awards, from high-end commercial offices and mixed-use projects to local community and small-scale environmental developments.

“The awards have always celebrated the quality and diversity in our built environment and as we move towards realising the Leeds Arena and Trinity Leeds it is set to continue well into the future.”

Now in its 24th year, the Awards celebrates a range of developments including new buildings, altered and conserved buildings, landscape and public realm schemes and the unusual temporary works taking place across the city on vacant development sites.

Broadcaster Andrew Edwards will present the ceremony with a keynote speech from guest assessor John Lyall, known for his restoration of the historic Leeds Corn Exchange in the early 1990s.
