YP Letters: Cameron ducked pledge over EU vote

From: Alan Machin, Bawtry Road, Doncaster.
Can David Cameron be described as 'honest'?Can David Cameron be described as 'honest'?
Can David Cameron be described as 'honest'?

IN his letter (The Yorkshire Post, July 4), Paul Brown stated: “Our Prime Minister is an honest man.”

Surely he cannot be referring to David Cameron who, before the 2010 General Election, stated that there would be no top-down reorganisation of the NHS? He also proposed to reduce immigration to the “tens of thousands” and if this did not happen the electorate should “vote him out” – he now claims this reduction was just an ambition. Well his ambition was certainly greater than his ability.

He also said he would implement the decision of the EU referendum, instead of which he resigned as soon as the result was known. As someone from Barnsley also recently pointed out, he told us we British were not “quitters”, then promptly quit as Prime Minister.

One promise he did keep was to be “green” – defined in the dictionary as naive and gullible. Well he was certainly that when he thought he could scare the electorate into voting to stay in the EU.

AN open letter to the lemmings in the Parliamentary Labour Party. It may have passed you by, but in 13 years Tony Blair and Blairism squandered a Parliamentary majority of 179 and the support of hundreds of thousands of party members.

Gordon Brown couldn’t win a General Election, neither could Ed Miliband. The only way that Labour today can do that is to appeal to those party members so alienated by Blairism, together with a new constituency of enthusiastic young people.

In essence, the very people who have flocked to the party behind Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. If the plot to remove Jeremy succeeds, who will vote for you? Having collectively spat out your dummies, it is now time to come back to the real world.

From: Tim Bradshaw, Slaithwaite.

OH no! Since voting to leave the EU, what are Germany’s car producers going to do now? No Mercedes, Audis, BMWs or Porches allowed into Great Britain?

Special tariffs will have to be advised along with quotas. At least we will be able to export thankfully, with our permission of course, German-owned Rolls Royces proudly made in Britain.

I forgot to mention VW as well who, coincidently, happen to own Bentley cars also.

THE SNP is whinging again about the EU “out” vote, even though over a million in Scotland voted for Brexit.

If they get a second vote for independence and win to break up the UK, we, the English, should rebuild Hadrian’s Wall and you won’t have to ask for volunteers to do it.

From: Terry Palmer, South Lea Avenue, Hoyland, Barnsley.

CRIES of “we don’t agree with the result” and “let’s have a re-run” of the EU referendum simply because it didn’t go the remainders way is totally and utterly undemocratic.

Do not be fooled by these unelected bureaucrats in Brussels (Strasbourg next week) because their sham will be called into question by at least another five nations wanting an in/out referendum in the near future.

As some have said, the democratic will of the people has been given and we, like it or not, just have to get on with it.

From: DM Curson, Elland.

WE cannot afford to continue pouring our precious earnings into such a “back-of-a-napkin” institution like the EU. By all means, pay the officials a living salary – but let’s see where it is all going.

From: Tim Hunter, Farfield Avenue, Knaresborough.

THANK you Nigel Farage, we owe our freedom to you (The Yorkshire Post, July 5).

The job isn’t finished yet though, and in fact, I believe that Ukip has a great future ahead.

When the full franchise for voting was achieved in 1918, it didn’t result in the end of the Labour movement. In fact, it was only the beginning – the extension of the franchise actually led to an entire party collapsing (the Liberals) and Labour becoming the main opposition.

The only party that people will trust to maximise the benefits of Brexit will be Ukip. There is every possibility that Ukip, the true People’s Party, could now become a major force at Westminster.

From: Alison Harris, Stray Towers, Victoria Road, Harrogate.

IF anything good has come out of the events of the last two weeks one thing is very obvious – for the first time in many people’s lives their vote has actually counted.

There has been much talk of the undemocratic nature of the EU but ironically MEPs have always been chosen by a far fairer system than our own MPs – by proportional representation.

Now that people have realised that their vote can count it is surely time to replace our outdated and unfair, first past the post system which effectively disenfranchises many of us. Our governments are chosen by a few voters in a few marginal seats. No wonder there is widespread apathy amongst voters. It is time to change the system and take control.

From: Don Burslam, Elm Road, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury.

WE are told that the vote to leave is carved on tablets of stone. It is the politicians who have got us into this mess.

David Cameron opted for a referendum which is inappropriate in a Parliamentary democracy. Ukip, together with Mr Johnson and others, then embarked on the most dishonest political campaign in history deceiving many gullible people. Mr Corbyn helped by his lukewarm “support” for the EU.

We are now told we must accept this stupid mistake
for good.

It is up to the aforementioned bungling politicians to see that this decision is reversed as soon as possible, one way or the other.
