Her final selection will be scrutinised to see whether it is gender-balanced and represents a cross-section of society even before the merits of individuals are considered.

But Theresa May faces the added pressure of reassuring the Leave wing of the party that it has a strong voice at the top of Government given her Remain credentials and those of other senior figures she is likely to retain.

Her arrival in Downing Street could see some high profile moves and even departures from the Cabinet table.

George Osborne’s reputatuon had already taken a hot after his March Budget and his key role in what Leave campaigners branded “project fear” ahead of the referendum has angered many within the party.

It may suit both Mrs May and Mr Osborne to move him on but anything other than the Foreign Office or Home Office would be a demotion and she is likely to want to reward others with those major roles.

Following his bruising and as yet unresolved dispute with junior doctors, Jeremy Hunt is another likely candidate to leave his current post as Health Secretary.

Having served as her campaign manager, Leader of the Commons Chris Grayling will hope for a significant department or perhaps a role as lead Brexit negotiator.

Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox, who turned down a return to Cabinet under David Cameron to campaign for Leave, will expect to be invited back into Government.
