HUNDREDS of workers at Doncaster’s last remaining pit are preparing to become masters of their own destiny as they take over ownership of Hatfield Colliery in an unusual partnership deal set up by City bankers and brokers.

It was announced last month that a trust would take over the running of the pit, and today Labour leader and Doncaster North MP Ed Miliband visited the site.

Mr Miliband said: “Hatfield is the last operational pit in our area, so it was important that efforts were made to preserve it and save the jobs of the people employed there.”

Hatfield employs around 400 workers, who will now work for the type of trust which manages high street stores John Lewis and Waitrose.
