Resort introduces evening bin rounds

A CASH-strapped North Yorkshire council is to scale back its fleet of refuse vehicles by nearly a quarter in a bid to save as much as £140,000 a year.

Scarborough Borough Council is introducing a revised collection system from June where vehicles will be used in two shifts, extending the hours they collect rubbish from homes from 5am to 10pm.

As part of the changes, the local authority will reduce its fleet of 16 refuse vehicles by three, although bosses say no jobs will be lost.

The council’s environmental services team has to make savings of more than £500,000 this financial year.

Officers say they are also looking at several other operations to achieve the remainder of the cuts required.

Andy Skelton, head of environmental services, said: “In response to the drive to reduce costs across the council, we’ve been looking at ways of reducing the costs of our waste collection.

“By extending the hours of operation we can reduce the number of vehicles required, thereby reducing our costs significantly.

Residents will see no change to their actual day of collection.

“Our commitment remains to protect the high quality frontline service we deliver and which our residents value and deserve.”

The council says the changes will come into effect on June 11.
