Mayor candidate’s tax call

INTERNET retailer Amazon came under attack over tax yesterday from a Labour councillor who will stand in Doncaster’s mayoral election later this year.

The online retail giant, which has a large site in the town, is one of several firms recently criticised over the level of UK tax it pays.

Coun Ros Jones, who hopes to unseat current Doncaster mayor Peter Davies in May said she would welcome multinationals, but said they had to “play by the same rules as the rest of us”.

Last night, Mr Davies said Coun Jones should be cautious when attacking major employers in the town and added: “Amazon may be looking to increase its presence in the borough, and this will not help matters at all.”
