Bridlington leisure complex gets green light

A £20M investment in a seaside town giving it state-of-the-art sports and leisure facilities got the green light yesterday after councillors unanimously approved plans.

East Riding council is putting £17m into the plans to rebuild “tired” and “inefficient” Leisure World, as a new attraction for visitors and providing “massively enhanced” facilities for local residents.

The “unashamedly modern” design, including a curving front, is meant to recall the great seaside buildings of the past.

The plans include widening the five-lane pool, which dates back to 1974, to a six-lane pool that will meet competition standards, a six-court sports hall and first floor 70-station fitness suite with views over Bridlington Bay.

Council leader Steve Parnaby said the new Leisure World would provide residents with a “facility that will be at the forefront of leisure venues in the country” and would also boost the local economy and safeguard construction jobs.

Leisure World will close this winter, with the new building due to open in the autumn of 2015.

In the meantime swimmers will use a temporary 25 metre pool in a building at the back of Gypsey Road sports centre.

Mayor Councillor Terry Dixon said: “It’s fantastic news. Anything that creates jobs and economic development has to be a good thing.”
