"The officer was off duty at the time of the incident.

"The incident has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission."

The policeman was originally arrested on suspicion of assault but was rearrested in custody yesterday morning on suspicion of murder after Mr Shackleton died.

A post-mortem examination showed he died from a stroke, the cause of which is still being investigated, police said.

Pub manager Gareth Richards, issued a statement through his employer Greene King Pub Company, saying he was shocked by the incident.

He added: "This type of thing is unheard-of here.

"We do not tolerate trouble in our pub, where providing a safe environment for our customers is our main priority.

Mr Richards added: "We are currently doing everything we can to help the police with their inquiries."

The police officer was bailed last night pending further inquiries.
