Police offer mephedrone amnesty
A police force has shown off a 13kg haul of now illegal drug mephedrone as it announced a week-long amnesty where people can hand the powder in without fear of prosecution.
The substance, now a Class B drug, is being collected by Humberside Police until midnight next Friday with users and dealers able to hand it over at any of their premises. No details of the person handing it in will be taken or retained but after the deadline dealers could face jail terms as long as 14 years, officers said.
Detective Chief Inspector Gerry Darling said the amnesty recognised that people may have been using the substance within the law but as it is now no longer legal, officers are providing "a chance to get rid of it without the risk of prosecution".
