A 25-year-old woman wearing a yellow top died after being hit by a silver Toyota Avensis in Ludwell Hill at around 12.50am.
A 25-year-old local man walking with her towards High Melton was arrested.
Police asked anyone who may have seen the couple to contact them on 0114 2202970.
