Police come calling in blitz on crime

POLICE, firefighters and a range of other organisations have been making house calls on a Hull estate in a bid to improve people’s resilience to crime.

Residents in Axminster Close, Dalwood Close, Sheldon Close, and Roborough Close were visited yesterday and offered crime prevention and home safety advice, as well as the fitting of free alarms following an increase in the number house and shed burglaries in the area in recent weeks.

The operation, which is set out to be rolled out across the city, was planned before Tom Winsor, the Chief Inspector of Constabulary, called for police to be more focused on preventing crime.

One of the most simple messages given to residents has been to keep doors locked, as 30 per cent of burglaries in the city occur when thieves have entered through unlocked doors.

Pc Steve Hepworth, from North Carr neighbourhood policing team, said: “This is the benchmark for how every neighbourhood team in Hull is going to work, with all our partners coming together. By working as one team, we can hopefully reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.”

A second day of action will take place on June 21.
