Plea over double killing

Detectives in two countries appealed for help today to keep a suspected double murderer behind bars after it emerged he could be released within months.

Violent obsessive John Sweeney, 54, is the prime suspect behind the deaths of Paula Fields and Melissa Halstead. The bodies were found decapitated, dismembered and thrown into canals in Camden, north London, and Rotterdam, Holland.

Sweeney was ordered to serve four life sentences in 2001 for slashing his former lover with an axe and stashing an arsenal of loaded guns.

The cases will feature on BBC1's Crimewatch tonight and a similar Dutch television programme.
