Plans to remember park train on track for success

MEMORIES of rides on a minature train are set to be rekindled after plans were unveiled for a new trail around a much-loved park.

The Friends of Sandall Park, in Doncaster, have been working for years on restoration projects and have now been given a grant for a new fitness trail for youngsters.

But the project will also appeal to parents who remember spending childhood days in the park, as it will include a recreation of the minature train which ran in the 1960s and 70s.

Don Crabtree, of the friends group said the £14,000 grant from the Veolia Environmental Trust had allowed them to move forward quickly with their plans.

The grant will pay for the creation of the trail, and the friends group has been able to find extra funds to pay for the train, which will include a replica of the engine and carriage recalled by so many people.

Mr Crabtree added: “It seems like everybody in Doncaster who is of a certain age remembers having a go on Tinkerbell, the minature train that was removed from the park in the 1970s.

“We thought it would be a good idea to include a version of the train because it was such a big part of the park for so many.

“After a period of neglect since the early 1990s the park is making huge strides forward in providing a great place for families from Doncaster to visit.”
