Planning blueprint approved for key development site in property hotspot

A BLUEPRINT for development has been agreed for one of the most important sites in a Yorkshire property hotspot which is earmarked for more than 1,000 homes.

York Council’s cabinet has backed the vision for how the regeneration of the site of the former British Sugar factory, which closed in 2007, should evolve.

On Tuesday evening, councillors approved the supplementary planning document, which sets out the community facilities and open spaces which will need to be included alongside up to 1,300 homes. The document will be used by developers to shape a planning application, which could be submitted this year. If planning approval is granted, construction work on the site could start within the next two years.

The cabinet member for city strategy, Coun Dave Merrett, said: “This is one of the most important sites earmarked for development that the city has. It is a major step forward to agree this document, which will be key in shaping how the site is re-developed.”

The city is one of the region’s most desirable locations with the average home costing £202,823 while the average wage is just £19,812, according to the National Housing Federation.
