Petition calls for renovation and not relocation of resort's Floral Hall

COUNCILLORS have come under renewed pressure to halt plans to relocate an East Coast entertainment venue after a 2,500-name petition was presented to a key committee.

The future of Hornsea's Floral Hall has been up in the air since budget cuts at regional development agency Yorkshire Forward threatened plans to replace the venue in Esplanade with a new multi-purpose centre attached to the leisure centre at the southern end of the Promenade.

The agency was expected to provide the bulk of the 5m needed to fund the project, and a final decision on whether it will back the scheme is not now expected until autumn.

East Riding Council has said relocation is the only option, but residents who want it to stay where it is saw their petition discussed at the council's Greater Prosperity Overview and Scrutiny Committee yesterday.

Michael Parry, who organised the petition, said: "What the people of Hornsea want is to keep the Floral Hall at its current location. We want to renovate it, not relocate it."

Committee chairman, Coun Richard Burton, said: "We have listened to the petitioners, the ward councillors and the portfolio holder. We have noted their comments and asked for a report back to this committee with a definitive answer on the funding for this scheme."
