Weddings at Beverley register office set to move to library as part of £3m plan

Beverley’s register office could soon be on the move, as part of £3m plans to bring more council services under one roof.

Currently at Walkergate House, which was built in 1760 , East Riding Council proposes to move it to the Treasure House, which will be renamed Beverley Hub.

According to Beverley Civic Society, which has been briefed on the plans, the weddings will take place in the “attractive” reference library, with an upgraded Champney Gardens providing a setting for photographs after the ceremony.

The future of Walkergate House is unclear, although the Civic Society has asked whether it and the customer service centre on Cross Street, which will also move as part of the proposals, could be retained for community use.

Civic Society chair Dick Lidwell said: “Walkergate House doesn’t provide the best rooms for a wedding. They spent a lot of money six or seven years ago to improve the gardens with a little arbour, but having Tesco in the background is not very exciting.

“One of the things we said in our feedback is could Walkergate House be retained for community use, potentially for the town council, which is in a little grotty house, which doesn’t have suitable space for public meetings or council meetings.

“The other thing we are concerned about is space for the tourist information centre.

“It is great that it will come from upstairs, downstairs. But Beverley is an increasing tourist attraction since Covid. Visitors need a better information source.”

Councillor Mike Medini said the new Beverley Hub would become “the vibrant heart of Beverley’s cultural and civic quarter”.

People can find out more at the Treasure House on August 23 between 10am and 6pm.
