Dame Judi Dench takes on her own Captain Tom 100 challenge - eating Malteasers - as fundraisers mark what would have been his 101st birthday

The York-born actress is just one of hundreds who have taken part in Captain Tom 100, which has encouraged people to channel the spirit of the fundraiser by taking on their own challenge.

Last year, his 100th birthday was marked with a fly-past as he finished the final lap of his challenge to walk 100 laps of his garden to raise funds for NHS charities.

The public took Keighley-born Captain Tom's mission to heart and he raised nearly £33million before being knighted by the Queen for his efforts.

He died earlier this year, and to honour his memory his family set up Captain Tom 100.

They have shared a video of Dame Judi Dench sitting in front of a bowl of her favourite chocolate treats.

Dame Judi said: "Last year Captain Tom inspired us all by doing 100 lengths of his lawn and raising a huge amount of money. I was completely inspired by it, now I'm going to do it as well - only I'm going to eat 100 Malteasers, my fave."

And some three hours after she took the challenge, the star popped the final Malteaser in her mouth.

Children at Cavendish Primary School in Hull chose to share 100 reasons to make them smile.

And nine-year-old Louise has taken on a 100km cycling challenge to raise funds for Sheffield Children's Hospital.
