Paramedic crash leaves driver, 19, 'critical' (with video)

A TEENAGER from Leeds was in a critical condition in hospital last night after the van he was driving collided with a vehicle driven by a paramedic responding to an emergency call.

The incident happened at the junction of Granville Road and Fitzwalter Road in Sheffield.

A Volvo estate paramedic response car, in green and white NHS livery, was travelling up Granville Road – away from the city centre – when it hit a white Citroen Berlingo van that had pulled out of a side street.

The van driver, a 19-year-old man from Leeds, suffered life-threatening head injuries and his passenger suffered suspected injuries to his back.

Both were treated by the paramedic at the scene before being taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

A spokesman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "On Thursday an ambulance rapid response vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision with another vehicle whilst en route to a life-threatening emergency.

"Another ambulance was deployed to the original emergency and ambulance crews were sent to the scene of the collision.

"Despite being shocked by the incident, the ambulance clinician immediately began to treat the occupants of the other vehicle until back-up arrived.

"Two male patients, one with a head injury and one with suspected spinal injuries, were treated and stabilised at the scene by ambulance clinicians before being transported to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

"Yorkshire Ambulance Service will continue to co-operate fully with the police investigation into this incident."

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said they were appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the vehicles being driven shortly before the incident to come forward.
