Owls fans give a hoot for promotion
THOUSANDS of jubilant Sheffield Wednesday fans gathered outside the city’s Town Hall last night to congratulate their football heroes after they won promotion to the Championship.
The event, which was organised by Sheffield Council, saw the team take to balcony above Pinstone Street. Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Coun Sylvia Dunkley, greeted the team on the Town Hall steps. After appearing on the balcony, players and staff were given a civic reception. Coun Dunkley said: “We’re delighted that Sheffield Wednesday has gained promotion to the Championship which is great news for the city.”
Promotion is particularly sweet for Wednesday fans as it was achieved ahead of their city rivals Sheffield United who are still languishing in the third tier.
