Outdoor show planned for refurbished Spa Gardens

The refurbished Spa Gardens in Bridlington hosts its first ever free outdoor performance this week.

People will be able to catch a performance of The Georgian Couple for an hour before the curtain rises on this year's panto at the Spa, Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs.

The show, which starts at noon on Wednesday, will be the first of many performances in the new space which has been the subject of a makeover as part of a 6.7m regeneration scheme.

Complaints have come from hoteliers over the use of trees in the scheme, which they feared would block sea views, but 36 specimens of Norway maples have now been planted.

The Georgian Couple is a walk-about stilt act featuring the larger-than-life aristocratic Lord and Lady Pompous in period costume, a show organisers said should go down a storm with children.

Renaissance co-ordinator Denise Cowling said their appearance should enhance "an already exciting day."

The Spa Environs scheme was jointly funded by East Riding Council and through Government Sea Change funding and Yorkshire Forward.

It involved an upgrade to the highway, footway and green areas around The Spa Bridlington including Pembroke Gardens and the banking between South Marine Drive and Princess Mary Promenade.

Tickets for the panto – which runs until January 4 – have now gone on sale priced from 8 to 17.50.

They are available from The Spa's box office on (01262) 678258 or via the venue's website at
